The tradeoff is that retrieval performance depends on how many nodes respond and how fast, the gateway adds a translation layer, and tuning erasure-coding and access grants is a learning curve most teams did not sign up for. files.link is deliberately conventional.
Your files live on traditional centralized infrastructure and are served through an integrated global CDN, so the second time a file is requested in a region it comes from a nearby edge cache with consistent, predictable latency rather than a node-coordination round trip. There are no access grants, satellites, or uplink CLI to reason about. You authenticate with a raw API key and upload with three calls — POST /v1/files/{folderId} for a presigned target that returns { success, urls:[{ url, id }] }, a PUT of the bytes to that url, then POST /v1/files/confirm-upload with { ids:[...] }.
To migrate from Storj, the simplest route is its S3-compatible gateway: aws s3 sync --endpoint-url https://gateway.storjshare.io s3://your-bucket ./export, then replay the export through the three-call flow. Pricing is the other practical difference. Storj's storage rate looks cheap on paper, but for web-facing content you still need delivery, and Storj egress through the gateway is its own line item; files.link folds delivery into prepaid credits so the number you budget is the number you spend.
The case for staying on Storj is real if your priorities are decentralization itself — censorship resistance, no single operator, client-side sharding — because files.link makes no such claim and runs on conventional managed infrastructure. But if your actual goal is dependable, low-variance file delivery for an app or website with the least conceptual overhead, the centralized-plus-CDN model is the calmer choice.
